What is the UPMC for Life Flex Spend Card and how does it work?
The UPMC for Life Flex Spend Card gives members health care dollars to spend on covered medical service costs (new for 2024), over-the-counter (OTC) products, and dental, vision, and hearing services. You can use it at providers that accept MasterCard, at participating retail stores, and through mail order. It works just like a prepaid debit card!

Members have the freedom to use the Flex Spend Card toward any of these products or services throughout the benefit year:
Medical service costs — Starting Jan. 1, members can use this card any time they are asked to pay out-of-pocket for their care, like for doctor’s office visits, urgent care visits, physical therapy, lab services, x-rays, and more. Members can use $50 of their allowance per transaction.
OTC products — Use this card to buy covered products at both participating retail stores and through our mail-order catalog. Examples of some covered products include cold and allergy medicines, foot and leg care, digestive health remedies, incontinence supplies, ear and eye care, oral care, vitamins and dietary supplements, and pain relievers.
Dental services — Teeth whitening, dental implants, dentures, root canals, bridges, crowns, and more.
Vision services — Contact lenses, eyeglasses, progressive and transition lenses, prescription sunglasses, and more.
Hearing services — Hearing aids, hearing aid batteries, hearing aid repairs, and more.
These dollars are in addition to any allowances members may already get with their benefits, such as dental and vision allowances. To get the most out of their benefits, members can see an in-network provider to take advantage of their dental and vision allowances first and then use their card second to help pay for any out-of-pocket costs.
Important UPMC for Life Flex Spend Card resources
This dollar amount is a yearly allowance, not a quarterly allowance. It will not roll over from year to year. Allowance amounts vary based on plan type and service area. Not all plans or service areas offer a UPMC for Life Flex Spend Card.
The UPMC for Life Flex Spend Card can not be used to pay for Part D prescription drug copays. The $50 transaction limit applies only to medical service costs. The transaction limit does not apply to OTC products or dental, vision, and hearing services.
