PITTSBURGH (Jan. 13, 2020) – April Golenor has been named chief Medicare officer for UPMC Health Plan.
Throughout her 25-year career, Golenor has led several Medicare plans in president and CEO roles and has extensive experience working closely with state governments and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). She will oversee the Medicare line of business for UPMC Health Plan, including the dual-eligible Special Needs Plans.
This fall, UPMC for Life was named the best Medicare Advantage plan in Pa. by U.S. News & World Report (10-15-19) and earned a 4.5 Overall Star Rating by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for its HMO and PPO plans for 2020. Every year, Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5-star rating system.
UPMC for Life also recently launched a comprehensive diabetes wellness program with significantly-reduced prescription medicine copays and enhanced offering for members with diabetes and pre-diabetes, including personalized wellness plans with UPMC Health Plan health coaches who are specially trained in chronic condition management.

Prior to her current role, Golenor was the CEO of Care Wisconsin, serving vulnerable adults through its Medicare and Medicaid programs. She has held leadership roles serving Medicare and Medicaid recipients including serving as regional president for the Humana Gulf States Region, as well as president and CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s Bayou Health Medicaid plan in Louisiana and CEO of Soundpath Health in Washington. Golenor also previously worked at Ernst & Young.
Golenor earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration at California State University – San Bernadino. She also earned a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt from Villanova University.
