UPMC Health Plan Illustrates Its Commitment to Active Lifestyles as the Presenting Sponsor of the YMCA Turkey Trot

Sponsorship of annual Thanksgiving Day tradition aligns with UPMC Health Plan’s ongoing efforts to encourage a healthy lifestyle while supporting local food outreach programs

PITTSBURGH (Nov. 27, 2019) – UPMC Health Plan is pleased to be the presenting sponsor of the 29th annual YMCA Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, as part of its ongoing commitment to promote an active and healthy lifestyle while supporting food programs for the less fortunate.

The Turkey Trot, which annually attracts thousands of runners for several events on Thanksgiving morning, includes the Turkey Trot 5K presented by UPMC Health Plan, the MedExpress Family Fun 1 Mile Run/Walk, the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-Mile Run, and the Gentile, Horoho & Avalli, P.C. Double Gobble (5K + 5-mile run). As part of the race day festivities, UPMC Health Plan will offer complimentary flu shots, as well as blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) screenings, throughout the morning.

In addition to the Turkey Trot, UPMC Health Plan annually supports numerous health and wellness activities throughout Allegheny County, such as the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon, Open Streets Pittsburgh presented by UPMC Health Plan, and the Let’s Move initiative at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. UPMC Health Plan is also a long-time supporter of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and its mission to help residents overcome food insecurity to lead happy, healthy lives.

“UPMC Health Plan is pleased to be the presenting sponsor of the YMCA Turkey Trot, a truly community-wide event that gets people outside and active while supporting the important work of local food pantries here in Western Pennsylvania,” said Dr. Ellen Beckjord, associate vice president of population health and clinical affairs at UPMC Health Plan. “Sponsoring the Turkey Trot is an important component of UPMC Health Plan’s ongoing efforts to encourage Pittsburghers of all ages to increase their physical fitness and live an active, healthy lifestyle.”

Proceeds from the Turkey Trot benefit the YMCA food pantry programs and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, with a goal of 10,000 pounds of donated food. Non-perishable food items will be collected on race day and during the packet pickup at PNC Park, as well as all YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh locations and Ascend Pittsburgh.
