UPMC Health Plan Named One of U.S. News & World Report’s Highest Rated Medicare Plans

PITTSBURGH (November 14, 2016) – UPMC Health Plan is recognized by U.S. News & World Report 2017 Best Medicare Plans ratings as one of the highest-rated plans in Pennsylvania and Ohio. This commendation applies to the UPMC for Life Medicare product. UPMC Health Plan was given 4.5 out of 5 stars. The new ratings are a resource for Medicare beneficiaries and their families searching for the best coverage options during the annual open-enrollment period, which began October 15 and runs through December 7, 2016. And they highlight insurance companies that consistently offer highly rated health coverage to Medicare beneficiaries.

"Medicare beneficiaries have a lot to consider, including cost and in- or out-of-network coverage," said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis at U.S. News. "Our tools allow consumers to easily search and identify plans that suit their specific needs."

"We hope that those seeking Medicare coverage during this open-enrollment period will look to the ratings for assistance," said John Lovelace, President of Government Programs for UPMC. "We are certain with that information as well our value and access Medicare beneficiaries can choose our plan with confidence."

U.S. News used plan-ratings data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to identify the Best Medicare Advantage Plans and Best Medicare Part D Plans. CMS rates individual plans on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, factoring in member satisfaction, customer service and other criteria. The U.S. News methodology analyzes all plans offered by an insurer in a given state. For an insurer to make the U.S. News list, its Medicare Advantage plans available in a given state had to earn an average rating of at least 4.5 out of 5 stars, and all its plans in the state had to earn at least 3 stars.

This award was not given by Medicare. For more information about UPMC for Life’s CMS Star Rating go to www.Medicare.gov.

Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5-star rating system. Star Ratings are calculated each year and may change from one year to the next.

UPMC for Life has a contract with Medicare to provide HMO and PPO plans. Enrollment in UPMC for Life depends on contract renewal. UPMC for Life is a product of and operated by UPMC Health Plan Inc., UPMC Health Network Inc., and UPMC Health Benefits Inc.
