The idea is simple: Combine knowledge and expertise to provide high-quality care.
Because UPMC Health Plan is part of the world-class academic medical center known as UPMC, we can offer our members access to top-ranked care, world-renowned innovation, and high-quality community providers.
UPMC collaborates with the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health and Sciences, an academic medical research center. This affiliation allows UPMC to develop internationally renowned programs in transplantation, cancer, neurosurgery, psychiatry, orthopedics, and sports medicine.
What do we mean by top-ranked care? UPMC consistently appears on the annual U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of America's Best Hospitals.
Furthermore, more than 400 UPMC physicians have been recognized as 2024 "Top Doctors" across more than 60 different specialties. These physicians are part of the Top Doctors® list, which is compiled by Castle Connolly. The Castle Connolly Top Doctor selection process is entirely merit-based. Doctors cannot pay to be listed. Castle Connolly’s peer-to-peer nominations and rigorous research process ensure only the most qualified physicians are included.
Our goal as a health plan that works alongside UPMC is to provide access to outstanding care and coverage when and where members need it. Our network makes this possible. It gives members:
- Access to UPMC’s doctors and hospitals.
- Access to other high-quality community providers.
- Nationwide access to care through the Cigna Healthcare℠ PPO Network.1 The network has nearly 1.5 million health care providers and 6,400 hospitals.2
Members can also get care from the comfort of home through UPMC AnywhereCare.3 UPMC AnywhereCare is a custom telemedicine platform that allows you to have a virtual visit with a UPMC provider using a computer, tablet, or smartphone.
- Nonemergency conditions—such as sinus infections, allergies, or pink eye—can be treated 24/7.
- You can also chat with a pharmacist through the Ask a Pharmacist feature.
- Children up to age 17 are seen by pediatric providers from UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Plus, UPMC Health Plan members have access to global emergency assistance services through Assist America.* These services can be used if you experience an emergency while traveling more than 100 miles from home—including to another country—for less than 90 days. Assist America can connect you and your covered family members to doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and more.
*All services must be arranged and provided by Assist America. Bills for any medical costs incurred should be submitted to UPMC Health Plan. They will be subject to the policy limits of your health coverage. Assist America is not travel or medical insurance, and its services will not replace health coverage while you and your dependents are away from home.

3 Members who are in Pennsylvania at the time of a virtual visit may select a UPMC-employed provider, subject to availability and discretion of the provider. Members located outside of Pennsylvania at the time of service will receive care from a provider employed or contracted by Online Care Network II PC (OCN), also known as Amwell Medical Group. It is at the discretion of OCN providers to choose whether to treat patients ages 0 to 2. OCN is not an affiliate of UPMC. Limitations may apply for members of ASO plans that have opted out of coverage. UPMC Children’s AnywhereCare is not available outside of Pennsylvania. Providers are not available to treat members who are in Puerto Rico. If a member is under the age of 18, the member’s parent or legal guardian must be with the member during the video portion of the visit, and the child and parent or legal guardian must be in Pennsylvania during the visit.
